Kittery voters pass plan to replace athletic fields with turf

KITTERY (WGME) -- Voters in Kittery passed a referendum that will put turf on the town's athletic fields.

School officials said the current grass field is uneven, leading to student injuries. They’ve also had to move home games to other towns when the field is unplayable.

Members of the town’s field committee said they found numerous ways to eliminate forever chemicals from the artificial turf.

However, members of the group Kittery Climate Action Now said they believe grass is safer than plastic turf.

Kittery voters passed Question 1 on Tuesday, which will replace the athletic fields with turf.
